Two Are Better Than One

A dear friend was going through a tough patch some years ago.  At the time we were occasional running partners.  Our conversations along the trail were often about how he was working through things.  I listened a lot, as he shared stories and situations about where things were, and how they’d become what they were, as we logged miles on the Burke Gilman trail.  I learned again; there are no simple solutions to complex situations.  We remain good friends to this day and often reflect on the miles together and what it meant to travel and train, to grieve and to grow – together.

Two are better than one.

Perhaps my closest friendship, and fitness level achieved after 35 years of age, was also borne and mutually fueled by my own need to work through things in life and his need to do the same – thus the friendship with my buddy “Bob” came into being.  Today, after almost 30 years of deep friendship, we don’t run and train for marathons and such.  We walk and talk and work through things, celebrate and enjoy things, calling and texting and looking forward to the next time we can get together.

Two are better than one.

My hope is that you are reading the storyline of your life right about now – meaning that you are thinking about how things are going, the direction you are headed, the momentum and strength you are sensing inside you.  My wish for you is that the roadmap is accessible, readable and confidence building in you, that the map will take you where you most deeply desire in life and that the benefits of such an endeavor are fueled by holy passion.  If that resonates with you, if you feel like you’re making great progress in the story of your life, then you know how true this is!

Two are better than one.

Some rather famous modern motivators (Rohn, Canfield, et.al) have pointed out to us that the sum of our lives is a reflection of the five people with whom we spend the most time.  I tend to agree with that theory.  Looking back at different seasons of pursuing life with ‘gusto’, I sought out the company of others similarly pursuing what I was.  Running partners help immensely!

Of all the people you know – who do most deeply admire who is nearer the finish line of the life you most deeply desire?  Do you have access to them?  Have you considered asking them to make some deposits of time, value and perspective into your life?

Two are better than one.

Friends – this is the time (and the note) where you are reminded: make their phone ring and get with them to get from them what they’ve lived a lifetime to share with you.  That’s right!  You – call them.  Call them right now and ask if you could have a little time to talk about what it is that you admire in them and if they’d share a nugget or two with you.  You will be surprised at their willingness and generosity.

Two are better than one.

Perhaps the most famous and storied wisdom fella in history shared a bit about what this note is addressing better than anyone else has ever shared.  History records his accomplishments and his despondency, as he lived both wisely and foolishly at the same time.  I believe he wrote these words to both encourage and to warn those he cared for.

Two are better than one, for they have a good return on their labor.  If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.  But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.  Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.  But how can one keep warm alone?  Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.  A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.  Solomon

Help is near, my friend.  Be encouraged by that truth…now be courageous and grab that phone and make a call to ask or offer some help…and start walking towards the life you were designed and destined to live.

Two are better than one…by a country mile!

Peace
